Quick Dam products are your first line of defense against floods, heavy rain, and water damage. After successfully keeping water at bay, it’s important to know how to properly dispose of or maintain them. Let’s explore how to handle used Quick Dam products, including but not limited to Flood Bags, Flood Barriers, Flood Gates, and Water Force.

  1. Quick Dam Flood Bags and Barriers

Quick Dam Flood Bags and Barriers are designed for single season use and are most effective if left in place for seasonal flood protection. They are not intended to be dried out and reused, but here’s what you can do after they have served their purpose:

  • Best Practice: Leave the Bags and Barriers in place if you expect more water in the season. They will eventually degrade and lose their effectiveness, so it’s important to replace them when needed.
  • Disposal: Unlike sandbags that often require hazardous waste disposal, Bags and Barriers can simply be put in the trash when no longer effective. The polymer inside will break down with exposure to sunlight, pressure, and time – leaving an empty pouch. After use, the gel inside water-activated Quick Dam products can be cut out and spread on your lawn or garden. This gel provides moisture until it breaks down, typically within a few days. However, be cautious when disposing of it, as it can be extremely slippery. Avoid spreading it near walkways to prevent any accidents. The outer layer can then be used for weed control under mulch, for example.
  • Drying Options: Although not recommended, if drying is necessary, place the Bags and Barriers in a cool, dry place out of the sunlight. Drying can take several weeks to months, depending on the environment. After drying, the material will feel hard and crunchy, and while it can still absorb water, it won’t be as effective as during its initial use.

Tip: Avoid drying the products on unfinished cement, as this can cause salt stains on the surface.

  1. Quick Dam Flood Gate

Quick Dam Flood Gates are reusable and designed for long-term flood protection. Here’s how to maintain and store them:

  • Post-Use Cleaning: After use, remove the neoprene cover and clean the Flood Gate thoroughly by wiping it down. Allow it to dry completely.
  • Storage: Store the Flood Gate in a cool, dry location, preferably with a cover to protect it from dust, UV exposure, and temperature extremes. This will ensure it’s ready for the next flood event.

  1. Quick Dam Water Force

The Water Force portable dam is a versatile reusable flood barrier that rises as needed with the flow of water. Proper handling after use will maximize its lifespan. To ensure a long shelf life, follow these steps for folding and storing your Water Force:

  • Clean and Dry: After use, clean the Water Force using a pressure washer or strong hose to remove any dirt and debris. Allow it to fully dry before folding to avoid mold or damage.
  • Lay Flat: Stretch the Water Force out on a flat surface. Make sure all the inner flaps are facing the same direction, using a stick or pole to help flatten them if needed.
  • Keep Joints Open: Before folding, ensure that all joints remain open. This makes it easier to tie another Water Barrier to it later if needed.
  • Fold Carefully: Start folding from the back so that the ballast weights are positioned in the middle, underneath the Water Force. Use the existing folds in the fabric as a guide.
  • Flip the Unit: Depending on the model, you may need to flip the Water Force. If the instruction label is visible, flip it and roll from the opposite side. If the label is not visible, find the label first and then roll from the opposite end.
  • Secure with Velcro: Once the Water Force is rolled, wrap the provided Velcro straps around it for secure storage.
  • Store Vertically: Store the Water Force in a vertical position in its storage bag or crate to protect it from UV rays and dirt. Stacking Water Force units one on top of the other, either upright or flat, won’t affect their deployment.

Tip: Use our Water Force User Manual as a comprehensive guide.
